Your ability to take responsibility for your life and actions is one way to measure your growth and advancement in life.

To some persons, being responsible or taking responsibility for their actions could mean that they are not wayward (whatever their definition of waywardness is) or their moral standards are high and well kept. But it goes beyond this.

Being irresponsible cuts across every area of your life — be it family, finance, health (mentally, physically, emotionally, etc.), spiritual, career, relationships, and so on.

To be responsible means that you are dependable, reliable and committed. It also means accepting the consequences of your words and actions.

Being responsible also means taking the necessary and practical steps to developing your potential and improving your life. These 6 signs are proof of your level of irresponsibility.

1. You care less about the consequences of your actions.

If you care less about the consequences of your actions, you are irresponsible.

Whatever action you take or don’t take, there are consequences to it. They could be negative or positive. The fact that you don’t care about how every action you take turns out is a sign of irresponsibility.

Have you met or interacted with individuals who act without caring about the consequences? It is frightening. Many times, they know what the consequences will be, but they don’t care.

2. You blame others for your mistakes and misfortunes

No one is to be blamed for your mistakes or how your life turns out — not even the government, the economy, the system, your family or your environment.

You are completely responsible for your life. Take the blame and stop putting it on people or systems.

Apparently, you can’t dispute the fact that people have a part to play when it has to do with certain mistakes made. But having the mindset that you play a major role in how your life turns out will help you a great deal.

3. You still hold onto your past

Your past is what it is, your past.

You are irresponsible if you still hold on to the past. The past can be good, bad, or ugly, but as long as it is holding you back and preventing you from moving you forward, you’ve got to let go.

The two major things you need to take from your past are the experiences and lessons.

No one cares about how your past was. What people really do care about is your present and your future. So, why dwell on a history that didn’t serve, won’t serve and can’t serve you.

Learn to let go of the past and focus on what lies ahead of you.

If your past was good, you’ve got another opportunity to make it better. If it was bad or bitter, you have another chance to make it as sweet and good as you’d want it to be.

4. You solely depend on others for help

This is a sign of irresponsibility.

Individuals who are irresponsible prefer to put their lives on hold pending when help and support will come.

But individuals who are responsible put in the needed effort to get what they need and take steps to ensure that they get them instead of waiting for others.

If help or support comes along the way, they accept it and move on. But they don’t pause their lives waiting for help or support to come.

Let this sink in — no one owes you anything, not even your parents, partner or siblings!

5. You always make excuses

Individuals who take responsibility for their lives don’t make excuses for their actions or blame others when things go wrong.

They think things through and use good judgment before they take action.

If the result of their actions turns out great, fine. But if it doesn’t, rather than make excuses, they learn the lessons and move on. They behave in ways that encourage others to trust them.

You are irresponsible when you make excuses for everything — lack of finance, lack of love, lack of resources, etc.

The universe doesn’t reward excuses. Rather it rewards resilience and bravery.

6. You don’t take charge of your life

You are irresponsible if you don’t take charge of your life. You don’t make plans and set goals for the future. If you set goals and make plans, you don’t follow through with the plans.

You are an irresponsible individual if you just take life as it comes. You take and accept whatever life throws at you and you do nothing to change the outcome.

You are not determined or resilient in finding ways to overcome adversity. You make decisions but don’t take the needed steps.

Final Take

The same way value answers to value, responsibility responds to responsibility. When you make a firm decision to take responsibility for all of your actions, those who reward and pride on responsibility will definitely get attracted to you and make contributions that will help you move forward.

No one is coming to save you. You have two choices to make; to either remain stuck in one place or move forward. And if your choice is to move forward, you’ll have to brace up and be ready to take responsibility for your actions.

Take responsibility for your life!
